What is grazing?
Grazing is an agricultural practice that suits many
of the small farms in the Appalachian region of Ohio.
SFI has focused its efforts on encouraging grazing
because of its sustainability for family farms and benefit to the
area economics, environment and community.
SFI works with graziers interested in pasture-based
livestock such as beef, sheep, hogs, poultry, goats and dairy. For
example, our partnership with the North Central Ohio Dairy Grazing
Council and its network of resources provides grass-based dairy
farmers a forum to exchange ideas and information. A product of
this exchange is the establishment of a seasonal grazing dairy research
project at the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed in Coshocton,
Ohio. The project goal is to develop a profitable dairy operation
to research grazing and water-quality issues.
