Small Farms at USDA

Small Farm Institute (SFI) is a nonprofit organization committed to the development, promotion and support of Ohio’s small family farm agricultural and forestry ventures within the Appalachian region of southern Ohio. SFI works to nurture new farm endeavors as well as help existing farmers explore different production, marketing and restructuring options.

SFI is committed to maintaining Ohio’s resources and the proud heritage of its small family farms. Through the institute, we work to strengthen the agricultural economic base, environmental health, and local community through the promotion of sustainable agriculture practices.

SFI partners with various private and government agencies to support and advance Ohio’s small family farms. In Ohio, 75 percent of our farm parcels are less than 150 acres according to recent farm-census data. This provides opportunities for Ohio’s small farms to flourish in close proximity to major consumer populations, and build the demand for new agricultural products.
